1) It looks like Mr. Mahaney and Al Mohler, with John Piper in third place, are your top picks for grad speaker. We'll let you post your comments on this up till the October 8th meeting and then we'll start with your top choice and go from there. I was telling your parents at the senior picnic that we are working with a budget, most of which will need to go towards your reception food. We are looking at planning a reception for 400-500 people. If Al Mohler or John Piper accepts, we'll have to find a way to fly him in here and pay for hotel/meals, etc. (Sorry, the practical details do have a way of altering plans!) I've already checked with the church office to see if they have anyone coming into town the weekend of your graduation. They haven't planned that far out yet. And if Mr. Mahaney remains your top choice, we'll certainly approach him first. Keep posting your ideas. After the holidays, we'll start posting our questions asking for food preferences for your reception so we can begin the work of pricing that out, but don't post yet about your food preferences. Plenty of time for that later! Right now, our focus is speaker, white/black gowns/senior trip.
2) Janelle has asked for a little more time to complete your discs from the senior pictures. You all will be receiving a disc with approximately 450 pictures on it. She's done quite a bit of work for very little money, so be sure and thank her when you see her!
3) Shoes for graduation - That may be one of the decisions the parents make. The type of shoe you wear can diminish a ceremony meant to be dignified, so I'll be asking the parents for their input on this one.
4) It looks like the votes are in for the girls to wear white. One of our fall deadlines will be to measure and order your caps/gowns, so that decision has to be final by October 8th. Keep posting on this one girls.
5) Just to let you know that Mrs. Poelma is doing the research for your senior trip to NY. So, what would you like to see there? Lion King is running on Broadway (Drew Jones said it was fantastic). Start posting your ideas. (She has been checking into hotel accommodations in New Jersey to save $$$, so you can do other things.) Parents, any thoughts as well on this?
6) Do you all want to do any fundraising to pay for your trip or outside speaker's expenses? Post ideas, but we'll leave the initiative and work of that up to you all. Someone will have to step up to the plate on this one. I do know that Brewster's Ice Cream (on 355) and Krispy Kreme Donuts Shoppe do offer fundraising ideas you could look into. Can't miss with ice cream and donuts! You could sell them at all the sports games this season! Or, I think Krispy Kreme sells gift certificates you can buy and give as gifts, but you can make $$$ on the sale of the gift certificate.
And kudos to Mrs. Hartnett for being the first brave MOM to post! Seniors - this blog is also for your parents' feedback as well, so we want their ideas too.
Thanks for making the blog so interesting to read! And Taylor, try to stay away from fashion statements, okay?!

I think that if we're in NY, we have to go see Les Mis if it's back by that point. Otherwise, Lion King is amazing (I saw it last year, and it's one of the most visually exciting shows I've ever seen). We could also go see Phantom or Fiddler or Beauty and the Beast (I've heard that it's really good, like Lion King). But I think the first priority should be Les Mis.
And I think fundraising could be a really good idea if this turns expensive. Wrapping paper, anyone?
i'm all for going to see Lion King, I've heard its really good! Les Mis is a good play too.
james was the first one to bring the fashion thing up!!! anyway, i'm not ashamed cause there were the few who agreed and that make me happy : )
james was the first but you taylor "thought about if for weeks" lol jk man. we should DEFINITLY go to ground zero, statue of liberty, ellis island, the UN and im sure theres more james could suggest as he has probably been to NY more times than any of us.
ps. i still wanna go on a cruise :) but ny would rock too, if we went to ny would we fly or drive? personally id love a road trip
We'd probably drive, because it's a lot cheaper.
And Sam, despite the fact that The Lion King is a kid's movie, it's a play for everyone. Like I said before, it's one of the most visually amazing things you will ever see, and almost everyone can agree that both the plot and the music are extremely good for any movie (and the new arrangements and songs for the show are sometimes even better than the movie). It's won quite a few Tony's, and kids shows don't do that, so no, we're not too old for Lion King. Sorry.
Hey now Sam, I like the Lion King! that's one of my favorite Disney Movies, not my favorite movie, my favorite Disney movie. And don't worry, I'm sure Taylor will let you cry on his shoulder when Simba's dad dies. ;)
we should def visit ground zero and the statue of liberty too, that would be really awesome!
Guys Lion King on Broadway is nothing like the Disney movie...you can't compare! not that i've seen it, but i've heard tons. Les Mis is a classic, and i absolutely love it, but i think i'd rather see Phantom. But it could be a moot point- we dont even know if those will be playing.
I definitely agree with Ground Zero idea, and would like to see stuff like the Empire State, Brooklyn Bridge, ...i dont know..normal stuff i suppose.
-My top choice for grad speaker out of those three is going to be Al Mohler.
Lion King or one of the others sounds great! I don't really care which one but I would love to just see a play!
The fundraising sounds fun too!
oh and are we allowed to say what kind of shoes we want?
Yeah, Rob, it just might be :-P You really have to see it to know what I mean. Devon, Les Mis is supposedly coming back to Broadway sometime this year, and I can guarantee you Phantom isn't going anywhere for a while, so I think we'd have the choice between both of them.
And I hate to spoil it for anybody, but Ground Zero is basically just a big hole in the ground. It's not really that moving because there isn't a monument yet. It's still good to go see it, just to say you did, but don't go expecting a whole lot.
ha ha emily! veeeery funny!
anyway, um... i don't mean to be a party pooper, but just to let you guys know... Ground Zero isn't called that for nothing. People keep saying "go see" ground zero, well, if you want to go see where the towers WERE we can go there, but there is nothing "to see". i know i'm an idiot, but why do we want to look at really tall buildings? wasn't the skyscraper like 100 years ago???
kate, first of all, i would not sit anywhere near sam for over an hour, and secondly, it would be a very bad bad bad idea for him to put his face anywhere near my shoulder : )
i also know that i'm out numbered, but do we have to see a "regular" broadway show? maybe like something new that nobody's heard about??? (i love creating lively discussion through my stupid questions : )
one last thing, who's car are we taking? we could take my van but we might have to double buckle.
LOL t double buckle....err i think brew would have a problem with that, unless we had segregated vans. Sam im totally for us 3 takin a cruise, but james can stay no need for pointless violence. Btw wouldnt it be really cool to invite brew to come on the trip! Sam B. (sorry to have to call you that but there are 2 of u) lion king is cool w me so is anything except Kats. ughhh i remember the torturous evenings when the only channel i had was pbs and all they played was kats non stop.
for the record, the above is a collection of random thoughts that really have no direction or point... i realized this while reading over it, after i posted :) anyway its late.
about the Lion King play, i'm not comparing to the movie... i'm just saying i like the movie so the play must be that much better!
hmmm... double buckling. not so much.
T, I'd love to try a new show, problem is the vast majority of shows on Broadway are very immoral. Those particular ones are famous because they are universal, everyone can watch them (almost). Other slightly less famous ones (Rent comes to mind) are much more immoral. So I'd love to try, but I think the chances of finding one we could actually attend in good conscience would be fine.
And tall buildings are really cool.
David, I think it wouldn't be cool if we invited brew along on this trip. As a matter of fact, I think it would be very UNcool for him to come along. Enough bad stuff happens to him in G-Burg. How much worse would it be in NY? jk. We love you brew.
I definitely think that Les Mis is first priority. If you're not sure about this one cause you're not sure of the quality, drop your questions and vote for it. It's amazing.
And I'd really like to see (or not see) ground Zero at least once in my American youthness. So this might be my last chance while I'm a youth.
Thanks Mrs. Poelma for researching this for us!
Ha yeah well brew is accident prone but still he's a great guy, anyway that was just a completely random suggestion. still i'd pay to see him wander off and set off some security alarm at the UN.
Taylor, I don't know what I said that was funny =)
I would love to go see Ground Zero. I guess I have to disagree that it's just a hole. It is a hole but not just any hole. I've seen it so many times on tv and I think that it would be really cool to see it for real and have more of a picture of what happened there.
i agree with emily, it really isn't just a hole. it would be cool to see it even if there isn't much there.
"She has been checking into hotel accommodations in New Jersey to save $$$..."
uh, just as long as we DON'T stay in Jersey City!!! ::shudder:: ...right Devon?? lol. It's a really, really sketchy place =/
haha, I've heard that story before...
Yikes stephy...i had the same thought when i read that post...eeek, creeps me out just thinking about it...
i agree...a hole, but not just any hole. I want to be able to say that i was there. i wish helicopters were bigger so that we could all go on one- i've wanted to go on a helicopter ride for forever, esp. in NYC.
Another fun idea to do as a senior class- i love snowboarding and it'd be cool if a bunch of us (any who like it or want to at least try)could do a day trip up to Liberty or something. Just a thought.
~Devon
I don't know about it now, but when I saw Ground Zero it was still quite impacting/emotional. Definitely more than just a whole, but I get your point Taylor. No hard feelings or anything ;)
basically we went to NE as a history class 2 summers ago...and one night we stayed in Jersey City which was like...really bad (walk down the street and smell the pot, trying to stay away from the creepy ppl, seeing totally scarring things, ha...etc...) It was like, the worst place we could've stayed...We walked into the a resteraunt and the guy just kinda stared at us like we were insane: "you all walked here?? by yourselves???" Ha, and it was like 15 g i r l s, pretty much no protection 'cept mike b and corey furman...
so uh, yeah kinda funny looking back but not so fun while we were there...
so on that note, we won't go walking around at night alone.
ah, but on this trip you have quite a few strapping young men (ie. sam b),so i vote jersey!!!
i didn't say anything agains't going to NJ, i'm just sayin that we girls won't go walking around at night alone. i def vote for NJ and NYC!
i know that. it was a joke...
