Broadway

Hey everyone,

So if we end up going to New York, we'll probably be going to see a Broadway show. And if we got to see a Broadway show, we'll have to buy the tickets extremely far in advance. So here's my question to you: what show would you like to see? Here are the ones that I'm aware of that will be playing in April/May/June (when we'll be taking the trip) that we could actually go see:

  • The Phantom of the Opera
  • Fiddler on the Roof
  • The Lion King
  • Beauty and the Beast
  • Tarzan

Les Miserables will be coming back to Broadway for a six-month run, but the run ends in March, so we wouldn't be able to see it.

And for all of you people who can't believe I just put Beauty and the Beast on that list, let me add that, like Lion King, it is one of those shows that loses it's childish stigma when it enters the Broadway stage and is supposed to be absolutely fabulous. If I missed any shows that are viable options, mention them in the comments.

What would you like to see?

Uh...lion king? no, fiddler on the roof. no, phantom of the opera. No...you know, I really have no idea cuz I've never seen a broadway show. The only show I've ever seen is "The Christmas Carol" at Ford's THeatre.

(And because i can't resist. Oh my goodness, tarzan. TARZAN. I would pay for EVERYBODY. Hehehe.)

hey, i really loved Beauty and the Beast when i saw it!! like...2 or 3 years ago on Broadway. And i've heard lots of good stuff about The Lion King. So, yeah i agree with Lyd:

1. Beauty and the Beast
2. Lion King

Since I've never seen it (and I have seen Lion King), I vote for Beauty and the Beast. My other vote would be for Wicked, but my guess is that won't fly with a lot of people here (for those of you who don't know, Wicked is the story of the Wicked Witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz, and it's supposed to be fabulous. Lauren's seen it, I think).

So my official votes are
1. Beauty and the Beast
2. Fiddler on the Roof
3. Lion King

wicked sounds cool...

ooo, is Wicked showing?? cause i LOVE the soundtrack, I've been wanting to see the show, it's supposed to be REALLY good! nvm, I vote for Wicked and then Beauty and the Beast.

Okay, let me clarify that I don't know what exactly is in Wicked and if it would be okay to go see. So if someone who has seen it or knows someone who has seen it could give a content breakdown, that would be really great. Thanks!

And who knows, maybe we can split into two groups and see two different shows. I have no idea if that will fly, but it might be a way around some of the problems in the shows (for example, Lion King has one part that contains some seriously sensual dancing, and some people might not be comfortable with that). So I don't know.

Oh, also, I talked to Mrs. Mays, and she said that Beauty and the Beast is supposed to be even more spectacular than Lion King. So that's definitely a possibility.

I just talked to Chelsea, who saw Wicked on her birthday, and she said there was absolutely nothing objectionable in Wicked besides the name. The premise is that the Wicked Witch of the West is actually good, and Glinda and the Wizard of Oz are the ones who are bad (selling out their morals and killing lots of people and animals), and all the stories passed down are lies. It sounds really good to me. And the songs are written by Stephen Schwartz, who wrote Godspell, Prince of Egypt, and Pocahontas. So it seems like it would be a good show. Mr. Cairns also really liked it.

In all of the Senior Trip discussions, there has been, curiously enough, no discussion of the actual costs involved. Since I know some of you are saving money for college, for the Mexico missions trip, etc., it seems appropriate to look into what this is all going to cost. Hotels in the Big Apple and its environs are among the priciest in the nation. Broadway shows are also very expensive.

For example, TicketLiquidator.com, which promises the "absolute lowest prices" on Broadway tickets, charges from $150 to $210 per ticket for Lion King. "Some restrictions apply" to these fabulous deals, which I did not take the time to look into.

There may be ways to reduce costs on the trip, though with New York as the destination, it won't be easy. Youth hostels offer dorm-style accommodations at a much lower price. Restaurants in New York are very expensive, but perhaps some combination of restaurant meals and picnicking? (Again, in New York this might be tricky…)

Sorry to bring this up, but thought that some of you might want to know…

210 for tickets!!! yeah right, like i'll pay that!!! i'll be sitting outside with all my other homies who have their heads screwed on right : )

Uh yeah, as far as the musical goes...
WICKED WICKED WICKED WICKED! ...WICKED!

I didn't realize that was on the list. Forget about my other comment. Forget about Lion King forget about everything, but Wicked. I've listened to the songs and the story and it's very intriguing and enrapturing. I've decided to, sometime in my life, go see Wicked. Maybe they'll make a movie out of it or something...

But actually, I don't even know if I'm gonna go on the trip because of money restrictions. Currently I have almost next to nothing in my bank account and I have 2 trips I'm already going on this year (Mex-spanish 4-and NA) so... I'm gonna be talking with my parents more, but it's a possibility I won't go.

This really doesn't affect anything or anyone, I was just droppin' it down on the table, you know?

yeah, we got tickets for Beauty and the Beast btwn $60-$75. Usually you can get a lot lower prices than it seems like at first glance.

My dad's good at finding inexpensive rates for otherwise ridiculous prices...i can ask him to look into it if you want, once there's a show picked out.

The thing is, these tickets are worth $75 or $150 to get in to see these shows. If you haven't been in to see one, it's hard to explain why. The absolutely amazing quality of the shows they put on, the way they dazzle the eyes and ears, is worth every penny. Especially for a show known to be a spectacle, like Beauty and the Beast or Wicked, it is worth it to pay the money to go see it.

Kate said...

geez if tickets are 210 i'll be sittin outside with taylor as well

pedro del piero said...

well if they were $210 I would probably be sitting outside but uh... I don't think I'd be sitting with Taylor.

jk

could we get some real numbers on the money before we all jump on the bandwagon. I want to know how I should budget the trip.
