More about Broadway (Mary Poppins!)

First, just so everyone knows, nothing is set in stone yet. We may or may not be going to New York or Broadway, this is purely conjectural at this point.

So, having done some topical research, I have determined that all the shows we are interested in are around $110 for a ticket. If we have a group of 15 or more, though, we can get a major discount. So, here are the shows that are still in contention (in no particular order):
  • Beauty and the Beast
  • The Lion King
  • Wicked

It seems that, by popular vote, no one wants to go to Tarzan, and I just found out that Fiddler on the Roof is leaving Broadway in November.

However, I have also just found out that Mary Poppins will be debuting in November, and it looks really good as well. So that's another show that could be a possibility.

Also, for all of you who want to go see The Lion King, I must warn you that there is one part that has some very sensual dancing in outfits that make the dancers look almost nude. The part is only about two or three minutes long, but it is a problem, and might mean that we won't be able to go see it.

Finally, for anyone with concerns about Wicked, I have talked with several people who have seen it and they have told me that it is completely clean, and does not portray good as evil and evil as good, as the title might suggest. Instead, it merely states that the story has been mistold for generations, and the Wicked Witch was actually the good character. If anyone has Mr. Cairns' email address, he has seen it and I would like to get his opinion on it.

So these are all things to keep in mind as we're considering which show we'd like to see (and remember, it's all hypothetical at this point).

110 is still enough to make me want to skip it. just wondering, do we HAVE to see a broadway show??? isn't there like a bazillion other things to do?

i was just thinking, (yeah, isn't that amazing!) what if we decided to stay localish and see something at the kenedy center? if you guys are sooo set on seeing a production then maybe we could pull that. i'm assuming that that is cheaper than broadway... not positive though.

oh! another local thing i thought of was a corn maze! there is one in fredneck (said with emmense love : ) that we went to that was really fun! you do it at night so it's pretty much pitch black. you've got flashlight in all, but it's still a blast. i went with my family and could only think of how cool it would be with 30 seniors!!!!!!!

The Kennedy Center doesn't even begin to compare to Broadway. There really is no parallel. They are two separate planes entirely.

Some of the group discounts would depend on where we sat. If we were in the mezzanine or towards the back, the tickets get much lower, and if we have a group price, they get lower still (probably down to the range of $50-$90).

Here's another possibility: those of us who are okay with spending that money can go up to see the show and we can do something else for the senior trip. Just a thought.

And I think a corn maze would be a blast.

i am quite sorry to have offended you in such a crude manner, Mr. Branchaw (i've been reading Jane Austin : )
it was just a thought, maybe not so well thought out, but a thought nonetheless. i've only seen one show at each venue and i don't remember a lick of the one at the kenedy center. all i know it that it's a big building in DC. so sorry! (not really considering it's sam : )

You should be sorry. I can't believe you would even suggest something like that...just kidding. What I meant was that something at the Kennedy Center may be fine, but it will almost never reach the Broadway level. Sorry if I came across too intense.

And it's Jane Austen, by the way.

NO! Mary Poppins is NOT a possibility! I've had enough of that woman in my childhood thank you very much. I will not deliberately visit those painful memories.

We have a local farm up in the Frederick area that has a corn maze. It's got a bunch of other stuff too. I'm not sure if the corn maze is open during the night (go figure) but we might be able to get special admittance with a large group. If people want me to, I can go check it out and figure out how and if things can work.

the maze is not nearly as big as the one in thurmont though. I actually have no clue how big it is. but from the outside it does not look that big.

again, if people want to get into this, I can get the info on this particular maze. And if someone else besides me could to the work to contact people and see if they want to come, that would be ideal. I'd need to talk to my parents before I can tell you that I can organize anything.

i like my friends :) you guys make me smile.

personally, i'm starting to lean away from the the whole NY idea. It's tons more complicated that I originally imagined and I'd like of like to be with everybody together rather than 20 of us in a skyscraper and the other 10 watching Mary Poppins.

Corn Mazes are lovely :)

i'm also reconsidering the NYC trip. only because the money and planning seem to be a little more involved than i originally thought. i'm not totally bailin' on you guys, i just need to get some more concrete details before i can make a decision. did we decide that NYC is the only option? i know we can come up with something better than NY! i KNOW, also, for a fact, that we have some super creative people in our class.

I'm with you Lauren. Hear hear. And don't forget, guys, fundraisers are definitely an option: Ledo's, Brusters, and I was just somewhere else that offered that as an option that is escaping me. In other words, there are a lot of ways to raise money for trips like these...just look at all the ways that the senior class has been doing it. Let's get our brains in gear and raise some money!

I've never been to NYC before (yes, I know I'm an uncivilized hillbilly), anyway I'd love to go, especially with great friends like you guys. My uncultured mind is still having trouble grasping the concept of spending $90-200 to see a show about the Non-Wicked Witch of the West or Mary Poppins, even if it does "dazzle your eyes and ears." What do you think of splitting into two groups when some people want to see the broadway.
When it comes to saving money staying at youth hostels sounds great to me. Also I'm sure McDonald's in NY still have the dollar menu. We could always eat their some of the time.

i don't know... i mean i guess it wouldnt' really matter as long we have fun and hang as a class or whatever but i'm not so sure.
