I've got a couple of items I need to let you know about:
1) I've been in touch with Mr. Mahaney's office with the invitation to speak at the graduation. I figured I'd better ask sooner rather than later. Unfortunately, he has had to decline, but he was very honored to be asked.
2) While you all are discussing the senior trip, I need to let you know that the final decision to even take a trip is with all the parents. The parents will need to discuss the whole idea before a final decision is made.

real quick guys, i wasn't at ALL trying to be disrespectfull to what happend on 9/11. i'm really sorry if you read it like that. please accept my apoligies.
Same here, I didn't choose my words very carefully with what I said. So I'm sorry to anyone I offended.
And since Mr. Mahaney is out, and it's really expensive to fly Al Mohler or John Piper out here, why don't we go for Gene Edward Veith? He's in the area (he works at Patrick Henry), he's amazingly godly, and he's a good speaker. What more could we ask for? (I'd encourage you guys to do some research on him, especially read his blog for World magazine)
About the speaker...what about a Sovereign Grace pastor. Some one like Mr. Shank, Mr. Harvey, Mr. Donahue? I think it would be really cool to have Mr. Josh Harris too!! just thoughts!
I'm sure Gene Edward Veith is a great guy but personally, I think we should hear from someone we've all heard of and been affected by in some way whether that be through a book or teaching or whatever.
Bob Donahue rocks. That is a good idea Emily.
Im all for the Bob Donahue idea. major props to whoever thought that one up.
I concur with James. I'm sure Mr. Veith is a great person. Still, I'd much rather hear from someone who has meant something in my spiritual/academic life.
Bob Donahue sounds great! He is a really good speaker, i definetely put my vote in for him.
i know i already voted, but what about kenny roy? wasn't he like a pro athlete and a sucessful business man? i'd like to hear from him if everybody keeps saying that they want someone they know.
I have an idea for something fun to do in NYC. The Circle Line gives two different length boat tours around the island (Robbie might get a cruise yet!) We went on the shorter one. You really get to see the city from an uncommon view, the view the immigrants saw as they arrived. The boat dock is near 42nd street I think.
Mrs Hartnett
absolutely
people should have heard of him, he spoke at our church just a little while ago.
Regarding the speaker, it's risky to choose someone who you have never heard give a formal speech. (Pastors are safe, because sermons are like speeches. :-))
I have heard many well-known personalities give speeches that bombed. Why did the speeches fail? Sometimes it's because they were too busy to prepare well. Often, it's because the person was a strong writer, but a weak speech-maker.
You may recall one of the dads saying that Gene Edward Veith was a great writer, but in person he isn't so good. Once I heard another man, reputed to be a good speaker, give a lousy speech. He said that he had felt led to throw away his prepared notes and speak "off the cuff." It didn't work well and the speech was hard to follow. Few people can speak extemporaneously and pull it off. CJ Mahaney can do it. Probably Joshua Harris can, too, but it's a rare gift.
So, to summarize -- not everyone can give a speech! Choose someone you know is up to the task.
The suggesion of Bob Donohue is a great one. He has a heart for young people, and he is an exhilarating and visionary speaker.
That homeschool pioneer, Joshua Harris, would be another fabulous choice, IMHO. (I assume we've already checked, and he's busy?)
Just my 2-cents worth...
